How UV and Salt Air Damage Screen on the Cape Fear Coast
Screen doesn't last forever anywhere, but the coastal environment in Wilmington accelerates the process. UV exposure breaks down the fiberglass strands that hold the mesh together, and you start to see sagging, brittleness, and holes that weren't caused by anything hitting the screen. Salt air corrodes aluminum screen from the inside out. You'll see rust-colored streaks, and when you press on the screen it crumbles rather than flexing. Both types of deterioration make the screen ineffective and look bad.
Most homeowners on the Cape Fear Coast get 7-12 years out of standard fiberglass screen before it needs replacing. Properties closer to the water, especially within a block or two of the ocean or tidal marshes, tend to be on the shorter end of that range. Sun exposure matters too. A west-facing porch that gets direct afternoon sun will show UV damage faster than a shaded north-facing one.

How Often Should You Rescreen in Coastal NC?
There's no fixed schedule that applies to every porch, but a rough guide for Wilmington-area properties: check your screen every 3-4 years and plan for a full rescreening every 7-12 years. If you're on a canal, creek, or marsh-front property, lean toward the shorter end. If your porch is fully shaded and well back from the water, you may make it to 12-15 years with fiberglass screen in good condition.
Signs it's time to rescreen: small holes appearing with no obvious cause, screen that feels stiff or brittle rather than flexible, sagging panels that no longer sit taut, visible corrosion or rust staining on aluminum screen, or a noticeable increase in the number of insects getting inside despite no obvious damage. Any single large tear from storm debris or a pet is a good time to replace the whole panel rather than patch it, since the rest of the screen is likely the same age and not far behind.
No-See-Um vs. Standard Mesh: Which One You Actually Need
Standard fiberglass screen is 18x14 mesh, meaning 18 strands per inch horizontally and 14 vertically. That opening size is fine for mosquitoes, which are large enough to be stopped by it. It does nothing for no-see-ums, which are tiny biting midges that are common throughout coastal NC, particularly in areas near salt marshes, the Cape Fear River, tidal creeks, and any stagnant water. They're most active at dawn and dusk and can make a screened porch essentially unusable during peak activity times.
No-see-um mesh runs 20x20 or finer. The smaller opening keeps the no-see-ums out. The trade-off is slightly reduced airflow, maybe 15-20 percent less, and it can look slightly different optically due to the tighter weave. For most marsh-adjacent or waterfront properties in Wilmington, the trade-off is worth it. For properties further inland or in areas with less insect pressure, standard screen is usually fine.

It does cost more per panel, but it tends to pay for itself in reduced patching and replacement frequency.
The Rescreening Process and Timeline
A standard rescreening job doesn't require a building permit. We come out, remove the existing screen and spline from the frames, inspect the aluminum or wood frame channels for damage or corrosion, and install new screen with fresh spline. On aluminum framing this is a clean process. On older wood framing we may find deteriorated wood at the bottom rails or door frame that needs repair before the new screen goes in.
A typical 12x16 porch rescreening takes one day. Larger porches or those needing frame repairs may run two days.
